The Sol of Santa Fe
DJ Dynamite Sol keeps the party going through Thanksgiving and beyond
Here’s the scene: You’ve eaten roughly your bodyweight in Thanksgiving foods, you’ve fielded your racist uncle, you’ve argued about the shape of politics and the world and now you’ve grown listless because this is Santa Fe—the town that shuts down at the drop of a hat. What’s a bored local to do? Dy Dynamite Sol has you covered.
“It’s not just something I do,” he says, “it’s truly who I am.”
Surely everyone around here knows the DJ project of local musician Sol Bentley, a mainstay on Santa Fe stages known for bringing the party wherever he goes. This week, Bentley presides over two events at Boxcar—Wednesday’s Friendsgiving with DJ DMonic and Friday’s post-Thansgiving event, the latter of which finds Sol holding down the fort all night.
“On Wednesday, we’ll do a little more old-school hip-hop and stuff for friends who’ll be in town,” Bentley explains. “Then Friday, I’ll just kind of be doing my thing.”
This means dance jamz across a wide spectrum of styles. Mainly, though, Bentley says, he’s psyched that Boxcar has brought a little bit of the old magic to downtown Santa Fe again.
“It’s not uncommon for us to do 500 people on a Friday or Saturday night,” Bentley says. “And the demographic is so vast—there are 21-year-old kids dancing with 50-60-year-olds.”
You can also catch Sol performing with his reggae/rock act Boomroots Collective later this winter, and as part of a monthly residency at The Matador. That’s not even mentioning the private parties, one-offs, weddings, food events and more. In summation, if Sol’s slated to be there, it’s gonna pop off. (Alex De Vore)

Room for Improv-ment (Sorry for the Terrible Joke)
We here at SFR are often amazed how many people we meet who don’t know Santa Fe has its own dedicated improv comedy theater. And from within Santa Fe Improv, the groups and yuks flow like some kind of…grouped…up and flowing…group of comedy. Jesus. OK, look, local improv teams Lunch Ladies and Big Jabroni are slated to go head-to-head with about a million jokes off the top of their heads. Or maybe they’re just performing back to back? Either way, you’re likely gonna laugh, and we all know we could use some of that right now. (ADV)
Improv with Lunch Ladies and Big Jabroni: 7:30 pm Saturday, Nov. 30. $15. Santa Fe Improv, 1202 Parkway Drive, santafeimprov.org

Meet Me at the Crossroads
No, it’s not Bone Thugs waxing emotional or Steve Vai versus Ralph Macchio in an epic riff-off, but Santa Fe’s Crossroads Jam does find a pretty sweet intersection of local musicians and their love of the jam. This week, hit Tiny’s Restaurant & Lounge with your sweetest licks and sit in with some of the most dedicated musicians in town. And though you must attend with at least a little bit of musical know-how, the main thing is to keep an open mind and let the music whisk you away. The holidays are hard—this just sounds joyful. Crossroads Jam: 4-7 pm Sunday, Dec. 1. Free. Tiny’s Restaurant & Lounge, 1005 S St. Francis Drive, (505) 983-9817

A Little Mood Music
With Thanksgiving coming (and going) this week, it’s officially time for Chritmassy music to take over the next few weeks no matter where you go or what you celebrate. Succumb to the madness with the Lensic Performing Art Center’s Annual Holiday Concert featuring the Santa Fe Concert Band. This year’s tuneage includes songs from films like The Polar Express and How the Grinch Stole Christmas—plus Hanukkah songs, non-denominational holiday songs and more. Think of it like that scene in Freaks where all the freaks chant “One of us! One of us!” You shan’t escape. This is your life now. At least it’s good for families. The show is free, but you must reserve a seat online. (ADV)
