This Calls for a Celebration
Head to the museum or hit the great outdoors for Indigenous Peoples Day
Granted, Indigenous Peoples Day 2021 might not have the thrills and spills of the year the Plaza obelisk came down, but we still don’t celebrate the genocidal Christopher Columbus around here, and that’s worth celebrating. And though you could easily ring in the occasion with donations to any number of local Indigenous causes (the Santa Fe Indigenous Center and Tewa Women United come to mind), if you’re looking to get out into the world with others, look no further than the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and the Full Circle Farm at Reunity Resources.
At MoCNA, you’ll find a day’s worth of special events, including walk-in tours with docents or printmaking demos with Rebecca Kunz (Cherokee Nation), stories from the pubelo told by Cactus Eddie (Isleta Pueblo) and hoop dancing with the inimitable performers of the Lightning Boy Foundation. You’ll also be able to take advantage of free admission all day, plus 15% off at the museum store (which, btw, has some absolutely fire merch from some of the finest Native artists working today). If you don’t already know, this easily makes Indigenous Peoples Day the best time to discover why MoCNA was named the third best art museum in the country in a USA Today readers’ poll from May.
Meanwhile, down Agua Fría Street, local activist group Three Sisters Collective continues its commitment to responsible, community-based farming practices at farm/up-and-coming music venue Reunity Resources. From noon-6 pm, the sisters will be out celebrating Indigenous excellence, tending to the bounty and otherwise giving back to O’ga P’ogeh (the Tewa name for Santa Fe)—a community that is, let’s face it, straight up on stolen land.
So be cool, give if you can, and otherwise remember that our Native siblings are worth so much more than one day—even if it’s a great time to appreciate their countless contributions to what makes Santa Fe special. (Alex De Vore)

The Hearse Ain’t the Worst
Patrons of Iconik Coffee Roasters’ original Lena Street location may be curious about what’s up with the mysterious hearse parked at a nearby business. Matthew Horowitz, who opened the doors of Revive Art Restoration back in 2016, is its owner, and he promises to reveal all in his upcoming talk. In addition to that, Horowitz plans to tackle the world of art restoration, explaining how the process works with historic and contemporary pieces. If you’ve ever wondered how some works seem to last forever—or how art can be brought back to life—this is the event for you. (Riley Gardner)
Adventures in Art Restoration: 4 pm Thursday, Oct 7. Online. $25. bit.ly/3zRgsri

Oktober’s Here
Look, we all love the Santa Fe Brewing Co.’s massive flagship compound on the edge of town, and we all know the brewery kicks out some of the best-ass beers in this or any other state. But what we might not know yet is that the house Brian Lock built is going nuts for Oktoberfiesta, a day crammed with live music, an artwalk, a brat-eating contest and a dance party at sunset. The whole shebang is run by suggested donation (pay what you can, friends), and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to various local nonprofits. We’re pretty sure we had some of you at “brat-eating,” but don’t sleep on special one-off brews, cornholing, raffle prizes and that gorgeous HQ building. Also, like, there’s the beer. (ADV)
Oktoberfiesta: 2 pm Friday, Oct. 9. Suggested donation. Santa Fe Brewing Co.. 35 Fire Place, (505) 424-3333

Roll-o-Rama
Expect lows and highs all weekend when The Dusty Mic and Kure Dispensary join forces to offer a weekend of lowriders and, uh, high movies (if you know what we mean). Vote on your favorite whips, browse and sample food vendors, jam to a variety of DJs and take in live music from Santa Fe’s own reggae/rock-.hip-hop act Boomroots Collective. Did we mention comedian Carlos Medina is also performing? Bring kites, picnics and other outdoor ephemera. Saturday includes a free screening of Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke and Sunday offers Trailer Park Boys: The Big Dirty. Maybe don’t explain the movies to your kids? Or do. We’re not your mom. (RG)
