FIRST FRIDAY
Welcome to 2025—no pressure
Welp, we made it through yet another year, and now that we’ve done Christmas and Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve, it’s perhaps time to get back to living our lives like normal (whatever that means). Say hello to the first Friday of the year with these events:
For the planning types, the Santa Fe Public Library downtown location’s 2025: Making it a Great Year pops off in the afternoon with life choice and networking opportunities.
If it’s sitting quietly you desire, however, consider the Upstart Crows of Santa Fe’s production of Love’s Labours Lost, an early Bard comedy about—brace yourselves—love and its foibles.
If you’d rather rock out, Tumbleroot hosts A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac with Tony O and the Greatest Band Ever. We bet they play stuff from Rumours.
Proggy glam/blues-rock champ Skyway Man takes over El Rey Court for the first Friday of the year, too, so that should be a pretty sexy time.
Of course, that’s not all, and you can visit sfreporter.com/calendar for more events. (Alex De Vore)

If you didn’t get enough hot El Rey Court action with Skyway Man, might we recommend Team Everything’s ongoing Zodiac Party? The long-running astrology themed dance gathering celebrates our signs with rotating dance masters, and this week heralds all things Capricorn with dynamic duo Spoolius manning the decks. Expect a wide variety of jamz steeped in the techno tradition, but also so much more. Believe in the stars, man! OK, that doesn’t mean anything, but we do think there’s something to be said for the spiritual nature of zoning out with eclectic and electronically produced dance tunes. You’re gonna feel those drums, trust us. (ADV)
Zodiac Party with Spoolius: Capricorn: 8 pm Saturday, Jan. 4. Free. El Rey Court, 1862 Cerrillos Road, (505) 982-1931
Fam Jam
One of the nicer elements of the new-ish Vladem Contemporary satellite space belonging to the New Mexico Museum of Art is its commitment to community engagement. To wit: Alongside this week’s closing of the museum’s Saints y Santos exhibition at the NMMA’s Plaza-adjacent building (an exhibition dedicated to saints, believe it or not), catch the Family Art Making workshop at Vladem, a free-for-New-Mexicans gathering for families during which participants can make their own santo-esque portraits before wending to the Plaza to catch Saints y Santos before it comes down. Your kids still on holiday break? This’ll kill a few hours and light snacks will be provided. (ADV)
Family Art Making: 10 am-noon Sunday, Jan. 5. Free. Vladem Contemporary, 1411 Paseo de Peralta, (505) 982-6366
Mr. Martin
Didja hear the one about how local multi-instrumentalist and music scene mainstay Josh Martin moved back to Santa Fe to be one of the coolest and most talented dudes around? Well, he did, and we’re reaping all the benefits. Those who know understand Martin’s contributions to folky acts like Mary & Mars (we still hope for a reunion), rocky acts like Grateful Dead tribute band Detroit Lightning—plus countless other sessions and sit-ins. Those who don’t have a little something to learn when Martin takes over the ol’ Cowgirl on Tuesday. One never knows precisely what the guy will do, but we can definitely count on it being executed incredibly well. Is that a lot of pressure? Sorry, Josh. (ADV)
Name of the Event: Josh Martin: 4 pm Tuesday, Jan. 7. Free. Cowgirl, 319 S Guadalupe St., (505) 982-2565
