Artist Amina Re is no stranger to controversy. In a statement against gender inequality, her vivid works often picture dildoed women who could easily pass for extras on an Avatar porn spoof. This Saturday evening, Re takes over Revolution Bakery with a one-night-only event titled After Hours: Uncensored Look at Gender Dynamics, which showcases her racier works, [blue] warts and all.
What drives you?
I guess it's my sense that our whole world is out of balance when it comes to feminine/masculine energies—individually, culturally and planetarily—and we need more balance or our species is going down.
Who are these people you paint?
They're variations of myself. I see myself as a model, but I vary me according to what I want to portray. I'm sort of a neutral base that I work from.
What's the worst you've been called?
Erotic.
