Employing steadfast methods and a keen, modern take on traditional santero art, Santa Fe's own Arthur López has reenergized the artform and cut out a niche for himself. At the forefront of traditional/contemporary artists, López gives a talk on his technique today at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art titled "Painted Bultos and Painted Reliefs."
Your approach to traditional arts is fairly modern. Have you ever gotten flack for it?
Yes, but my art is always based on facts and I do intensive research on all my work.
Tradition helps to define who we are, I try to honor these traditions in all my work in a modern creative way utilizing the traditional methods.
What can folks attending your talk expect?
I will show the traditional process and the modern result. Also, a few small pieces will be for sale.
