On Saturday, the New Mexico Women’s Foundation takes over the International Folk Art Museum with its 11th annual Rag Rug Festival—which showcases everything from colorful, handmade textiles to woven basketry and “wearable art.” Gerry Cerf is the executive director of NMWF.
Basically, the name of the festival is the Rag Rug Festival, and over the years it’s caused a lot of confusion because people think it’s just rag rugs but we have lots of other things—including jewelry, baskets and yes, rag rugs to those who want them.
Why should people come?
Primarily, I would say to support the women artist of New Mexico. This year, we’re expecting 40 from all over the state.
I think the biggest surprise for people will be our new location, as historically, we’ve had it at the Udall Center on Museum Hill, and this is our first time at the Folk Art Museum. It’s going to be a surprise to a lot of people—including us—as we’ve never had it there before.
