Sculptor and educator Martha Russo takes over the Santa Fe Art Institute with “cavities and clumps: the psychology and physicality of contested space” an impressive installation on view through July 12 and a companion lecture this Monday at 6 pm.
What inspires your contemplative spaces?
The fine line between the abject and the elegant. Making sculptures and spaces that shy away from being named and invite questions and curiosities about form, material and gravity.
Has the contested space concept morphed over the years?
Yes it has morphed from meanderings about the interior of the body to activating the spaces around the body. But the underbelly of it all remains constant: hoping to make the experience something that is visceral, novel and strangely beautiful.
What can lecture attendees expect?
I will talk about some general ideas about contested spaces both psychological and physical spaces, relate this to the nervous system and novel experiences. Then, I will track the evolution of my work from singular objects to the more recent installation works. and then.
