What constitutes a good father? Victor La Cerva, MD, co-founder of New Mexico Men’s Wellness and author of Masculine Wisdom knows. This Thursday at 6:30 pm, La Cerva offers a reading at the SF Public Library Main Community Room examining “the inner workings of being male in today’s world,” followed by a discussion of healthy fathering and a book signing.
What constitutes healthy masculinity?
Let's start with emotional fluency, which means we are in touch with our feelings and can express them in ways that are not destructive to oneself or others; going for our dreams in a way that is consistent with our deepest held values; finding the right balance in life between being, doing and having.
What are the essentials of healthy fathering?
Your ongoing active presence in the lives of your children, no matter what the family configuration might be. Your loving participation in their development nourishes their roots. Your affirming actions teach them how to form their wings. Share and teach them what you love: music, riding bikes, cooking, camping!
What do women most need to understand about men?
Withdrawing into the male cave when there is conflict helps us get centered and clear; don't take it personally. We want to be your allies in your struggles against oppression, and we are sometimes not sure about the best way to do that, and need your guidance. Forgive us when we get into "fix it" mode instead of just listening, and gently remind us of what you need in that moment.
