SMUTTY
The only people who write opening lines like the one Zane Fischer used [
Visual Arts, May 14: "Contingencies"
] are: 1) men who got past 25 still thinking that smutty 14-year-old boy humor is cute, 2) men who think no one will pay attention to anything they say if they don't throw around some smutty 14-year-old boy humor and 3) men who think using smutty 14-year-old boy humor in an art review will show the world what great big cojones they have.
Ohhhhhh, Mr. Fischer --- can we see them?

ART FIRST
The May 14 editorial by Zane Fischer "Lil' Orphan Artist"? [
] is the best analysis of this issue that I have seen since my inbox started to be flooded with messages from artist friends. He rightly decries the number of half-truths and outright falsehoods in the movement to block this legislation.
I would like to add the observation that the framers of the Constitution, when creating the copyright, were not acting just for the owners of the creative work, but were also working to promote broader availability of these works for the common good.
Today copyright has been usurped by the interests of big media with very little benefit to the creators of works or the citizens of our country.
By way of background I am both a creator, as a photographer, and consumer, as a Web developer, of artistic works.

UNSUNG HEROES
I enjoyed your cover story on the
"Green Team"? in the April 16 issue
of the Reporter. I do feel that the Reporter missed an opportunity to recognize many of the unsung green heroes of the federal, state and county agencies.
I am speaking of the employees of the United States Forest Services, Bureau of Land Management, United states Fish and Wildlife Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Protection Agency, United States Park Service, New Mexico State Land Office, New Mexico State Forestry, New Mexico Environmental Department, New Mexico Game and Fish County Extension Service. Some of the individuals in your article were assisted by cost-share programs and grants given by some of the above-named agencies.
The men and women who work for these government agencies are interested in the preservation of the earth, with the ultimate goal being that our planet is available for future generations. The Reporter may want to focus on some of the hard-working individuals who have made career commitments to caring for the earth.

DON'T BELIEVE IT
Conspiracies have a rich history in Americana. See, e.g., JFK and MLK. When I first heard the notion that 9.11 was an inside job, I thought how could someone as incompetent and bumbling as Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney have proven to be have pulled off such a successful act?
One of Santa Fe's leading proponents of the inside job theory kept urging me to see
Loose Change
. I finally did and consider it the dumbest movie I have ever seen. On the fifth anniversary of 9.11, Amy Goodman conducted a debate with the authors of
Debunking the 9/11 Conspiracy Theories
and the producers of
Loose Change
.
Although rarely a model of fair and balanced, Ms. Goodman conducted an excellent debate. The authors destroyed the producers on every point. Did the Bush and Clinton administrations do enough to protect us from 9.11? Absolutely not. Should we continue to ask questions so this does not happen again? Absolutely. But to those who believe that the World Trade Center towers came down from a government-initiated controlled burn or that Dick Cheney ordered a missile fired into the Pentagon, I will repeat the advice of a movie critic back east who said, "Find a good therapist."?
