Very great points and discussion overall. I have always admired Terrence McKenna for his works on psilocybin, but no one has ever really challenged or questioned him. The only other well-known names related to 'shrooms are either comedians or people who really have no real basis to be trusted.
I will say, though, if you are familiar with McKenna, you will understand that he never really wanted to be the "go-to" expert on 'shrooms. In fact, he was rather introverted, and only began to render the role as the "magic-mushroom guru" after realizing that virtually no one knew the basic facts about the drug and what it could do.
I totally understand your views of his books, but you have to understand McKenna was putting together what he knew in a style that was natural to him. I don't believe he aimed the books to be about the scientific viewpoint on 'shrooms, but the spiritual.
In my experience, everyone that seriously uses psilocybin regularly does so for spiritual purposes, and Terrence's insight is a perfect combination of science and spirituality.
I would say McKenna's books are better suited for someone who is well informed on the topic, while his videos on YouTube are for people just discovering psilocybin, as its use provides a way not only to learn but find a path to take. Anyway, you made a great conversation and great points; I just wouldn't toss McKenna aside so quickly.
