Food, Aug. 13: “Queso: Hurrah, Hurrah!”
Cheese wiz
Thanks to Rob DeWalt for his great article on John Gutierrez, our newest cheesemonger. Gutierrez is a very sharp guy, is clearly passionate about cheeses and will be a wonderful addition to the Santa Fe food
scene.
Just for the historical record, Santa Fe's first cheese speciality store was founded about 1970 by Kate Tremper. Her father was Bill Massee, one of the early champions of American wine. She and Massee wrote a book on matching cheese and wine. The shop was a small corner tucked away in the shopping mall at Water and Shelby streets. The second speciality cheese shop was founded around 1980 by Richard Heller, called The Winery, located at Water and Galisteo streets. It had a large selection of cheeses and a nice inventory of speciality food products. They had a small but very well-selected wine department that was managed by Peter Handler, a colleague of Alexis Lichine. Both are still here in Santa Fe.
Those were good times for a budding turophile. Things are about to get much better, I think.

Music, Aug. 27: “Carrion Kind Kills”
Mentor Request
Augustine Ortiz, if you see this, my son could see his music grow exponentially from your mentoring. He currently plays music from Whitechapel, Periphery and technically proficient bands as such. He's 14, and his music has surpassed my proficiency, so I'm reaching out to see if this would be an extra task you might be interested in.

Editor's Note: Augustine responded that he's busy working two day jobs but recommended that youngsters "stay humble and explore music as a whole.
"Music is not a competition and it isn't about being the best. It is about expression and sharing your art. It is a ton of work and it means being able to cover all aspects as part of your team. From being the performer and the talent, to sweeping floors at the venue, picking up trash, moving gear, watching the door, helping other bands, etc. No matter how long you have been doing this or how good you are, this sort of stuff is essential."
CORRECTION
A story in last week's edition relied on a press release that incorrectly stated Tony Hsieh's role at Zappos. He was an early investor and is now CEO.
