Hear Our Plea
I want to make an appeal to Susan Sponar, spokeswoman of Public Resource Company of New Mexico. Listen to us, all of us. We are the canaries in the mineshaft.
When reason acknowledges coal as the largest driver of climate change, that coal ash leaking into our wells and aquifers threatens life, then reason must listen to the call of life itself and say, "Stop!"
Reason harnessed by the market, by legal restrictions that exact "cost effectiveness" over the ethical maxim, "Do no harm," is reason dehumanized. Let us live today as if future generations mattered.

News, Dec. 24: “All Washed Up”
Nuance Matters
Water needs to be priced on a tier system, but also by merit of its use. The antique term "beneficial use" used for legislation needs to be reevaluated for sustainability—in particular, to move away from development interests and toward small community-benefitting operations that manage resources properly with an emphasis on service as opposed to manufacturing, like this laundromat.

Consider This
To Nick Schiavo [the Utilities Department director who calls Luna Laundry's water use in Santa Fe a "sweetheart deal"]: How much in gross receipts taxes does this business generate for the city? How many residents have jobs because of it? How much money do city businesses save by sending laundry here instead of Albuquerque?

Correction
The story gave the wrong figures for the Luna Laundry's water use, based on erroneous information from the water division. Rather than 130,000 gallons in 2010, for example, the division wrongly stated the use was 13,000.
