Stayin’ Alive
Thanks for a great piece from Joey Peters. From its imaginative opening lines to its insightful coverage of what might be considered a "dry" topic—New Mexico's dire economy—it's a winner. As a longtime small business owner in Santa Fe, I appreciated getting a lot clearer on why so many of us have been struggling to stay alive and well recently.

Holding Our Own
Putting aside that the governor has had four years to address the fact our state gets more federal assistance than any other, let's not forget as New Mexicans we have paid into the system, and therefore we as Americans are entitled to something back. To pay in without return is a precursor to taxation without representation.
Martinez also attacked federal spending for bases and laboratories. These are far more than federal dollars; they are local dollars. In light of plummeting oil and gas revenues, this isn't growth; we're not even holding our own!

Crass Cabinet
Looking at these emails and the use of them by SFR and the New Mexican in the past, I cannot believe the governor was reelected. Her cabinet appointees are so crass and unprofessional. They look down on the poor, when in fact they are on the public dole by being so inept.
