Implicit Threat
I think that that painting by Charles Rosenthal is absolutely incredible. He seems to have captured the implicit threat we are facing, these nameless, hulking and faceless figures who embody what some of us see in our nightmares.
And I agree, it is a very fine painting indeed

Tragic inmate death
Committing an addict to jail can be a death sentence. Addicts often have tolerances to specific drugs and know the effects of those drugs on their body. When thrown in jail, the pain of withdrawal causes them to use whatever drugs, regardless of familiarity, they find.
Addiction is a public health, not a criminal, issue. This news is tragic and happens more often than people care to acknowledge. Incarcerating addicts leads to desperation, loneliness, unsafe coping mechanisms, a perception of worthlessness, and trauma for the addict and their families.

CORRECTION
Last week’s arts column incorrectly stated Charles Rosenthal worked for ad agency Droga 5. Ronsenthal’s wife works for that company.
