Public ISP Solution
There are certain things that we all recognize are public goods, and should be provided to all people regardless of whether it makes money to do so or not. It’s become even more clear during the pandemic that internet access has joined that list of things.
The best way to provide broadband internet access to the people of New Mexico is a public, state- or municipal-owned ISP that is not concerned with making a profit but only with providing a necessary service to people. Such a body would avoid many of the problems mentioned in the article, such as difficulty accessing government funds and land-access issues. New Mexico should avoid the trap of public-private partnerships and instead embrace public-owned utilities once again.
