Missing Church Story
I was looking for an article in the Reporter about the courageous effort that Archbishop [John] Wester has taken in bringing up the issue of a new nuclear arms race in which Los Alamos weapons lab would play a central role as a plutonium pit manufacturing facility for more US nuclear weapons…Archbishop Wester has sent a lengthy “Pastoral Letter” on the issue of nuclear weapons to every parish in the diocese. But he calls on all of us to begin a community and hopefully national conversation on the new threat raised by this massive new nuclear weapons program involving Los Alamos.
To put the program for new nuclear weapons in context, using information from the Federation Of American Scientists webpage one can calculate that the US arsenal of nuclear weapons in 2021 had an explosive equivalent of a minimum of 45,620 Hiroshimas. That horrific potential for massively destroying human beings and advanced civilization is so beyond any credible deterrent function that one can only wonder how we stumbled into this insanity.

Correction
Last week’s “7 Days” named the wrong school district where an employee was in trouble for planning to steal laptops. The district was Central Consolidated School District, not Farmington. We’re sorry for the mistake.
