TARA'S ORGANIC ICE CREAM SHOP
1807 Second St., 216-9759,
For a year you've been scarfing scrumptious lemongrass and
garam masala
ice creams at local restaurants and loading up at the market. Now you can buy by the scoop at the shop. All the amazing flavors are available, plus two flavors exclusive to the shop: Japanese green tea and
adzuki
bean/black sesame. Scoops start at $2.50; there are also bon bons, ice cream sandwiches, rootbeer floats and more. Stop by for the grand opening party on May 5. Festivities begin at 11:30 am and go on until early evening.
GELATO BENISSIMO
328 Montezuma Ave., 984-9104
Gelato
maker Ben Hernandez says he has no idea how many flavors he's come up with so far. Zillions? His freezer case only holds 18 pans, so you'll have to make your choices from among flavors like avocado and rose petal with cardamom. Ben sez he uses organic milk, cream and locally grown organic fruit (whenever possible). Cones start at $2.95. While you're there, check out some of the frozen drinks-but only after one of Benissimo's sandwiches (on Sage Bakehouse bread), a bagel with
mascarpone
or a slice of quiche.
ECCO ESPRESSO AND GELATO
105 E. Marcy St., 986-9778
Inside Ecco's freezer case, long, narrow steel pans of
gelato
and
sorbetto
are adorned with edible indicators of their flavors. Lacy fragments of cold, hand-poured chocolate jut out from the
stracciatelli
; cubes of green apple and sprigs of mint identify the apple-mint. Other tempting flavors include strawberry
habañero
(Ooh! Cold! Hot! Cold!), lavender honey and mango. Cups start at $2 and Ecco also serves a full line of espresso drinks, teas and sodas. A short list of sandwiches comes from Four and Twenty Blackbirds. Go for the
gelato
, stay for lunch.
