LA CANTINA AT LA CASA SENA
125 E. Palace Ave., 988-9232
In the cozy Cantina you can ask your server for grilled chicken quesadillas with a side of
Bye Bye Birdie
, or dig into a juicy steak followed by a hearty helping of Cats. If you love the drama of Broadway and know every word to every song in
West Side Story
, then you belong in the bar at La Casa Sena. In the summer there are two seatings every night, the first at 5:30 pm and the second at 8 pm; come winter they cut it down to one seating Sunday through Thursday and two on the weekends. Whenever you go, it's wise to call ahead for reservations.
VANESSIE
434 W. San Francisco St., 982-9966
The piano bar at Vanessie is packed nearly every night, drawing a loyal crowd of Santa Feans of a Certain Age who happily clap and sing along. Long after the last onion loaf and surf 'n' turf have been served in the dining room, the bar remains a lively, entertaining spot for a postprandial martini and a sing-along. The entertainment schedule changes often, but you can call and listen to a recorded message for the schedule. Generally the week is divided between Doug Montgomery, a Juliard-trained pianist with a penchant for show tunes, and actor/pianist Charles Tichenor, who charms the crowd with cabaret and pop favorites. On Fridays and Saturdays they often both play.
PRANZO
540 Montezuma, 984-2645
At Pranzo you can enjoy music on the breezy upstairs terrace every night of the week. The schedule changes regularly, but you can often find Broadway-seasoned David Geist playing jazz and show tunes while Santa Fe native Julie Trujillo, trained in opera, sings. The regular menu of unfussy Italian comfort food is served on the terrace, so go for dinner and stay for the tunes. Call and ask who's playing tonight.
