Though it’s hard to believe we’ll be wrapping up yet another year (it feels like this happens kind of a lot, huh?), 2024 will come to a close soon, and that can only mean one thing—partying hard in the hopes of snagging a smooch from some babe. You can easily make at least part of that happen at various events throughout Santa Fe.
At Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery, find the space-themed New Year’s Invasion event/costume party. Afterwards, if the recent spate of layoffs haven’t turned you off, you can head to the annual Carousel NYE party at Meow Wolf to cut a rug to the tunes of DJs Eldon, Ana M, Atomize, Erin E and The Muse. Stalwart DJ/music collective Team Everything welcomes DJs Bacon and Beeps at El Rey Court for the big night, too, and you’ll also find shows featuring JJ and the Hooligans, Josh Martin and Lori Ottino and Joe Illick’s New Year’s Eve Orchestra scoring the soundtrack of your night.
With so many happenings, you’ll forgive us for not having space to print every last event and detail. Simply direct your attention to the calendar pages in the physical issue, or steer your phones to sfreporter.com/calendar. Getting that smooch is totally up to you, though. (Alex De Vore)

Thrash for the Holidays
Nothing says season’s greetings like a grip of ultra-heavy metal bands melting everyone’s faces clean off with the sickest riffs in all the land. This week, such excellence comes in the form of Olympia, Washington’s Mortiferum, a band that finds a near-perfect balance between the sludge of doom and the chugs of death. Local shredders Street Tombs takes the stage, too, and believe us when we say they’re right on the cusp of superstardom; and Santa Fe’s Dysphotic brings the heat, too—a bit of a rarity these days, but exciting for the head-bangers all the same. (ADV)

Goodie, Goodie Gumdrops
Every Christmas celebration needs a kitchen table covered in graham crackers, gumdrops, candy canes and children hyped up on sugar competing over who made the coolest house. The Santa Fe Public Library understands the importance of the gingerbread house making tradition and has set up two days in a row for families to get the kids out over winter break to build a gingerbread house. They are also being super generous by providing all the supplies so the kids can go all out with the decorating. Just remember it’s a two-hour event and supplies are first-come, first-served, so if you have a specific gumdrop color scheme in mind, get there early. (Adam Ferguson)

The Real Santa’s Village
For those not aware, Alsace is a region in France—and home to the city of Strasbourg— not at all like the others in the country. Think more timber-framed houses, German-influenced food and Riesling style sweet white wines. This combination inevitably makes for quintessential Christmas vibes. During the winter months, Strasbourg and villages throughout the region get decked out in dazzling lights and decorations, and Christmas markets are set up serving warm spiced wine, chestnuts and kougelhopf. If this sounds like the type of place you want to escape to for an evening, join Philip Holtzweiler at the Travel Bug as he presents a slideshow on what Christmas in Alsaec is all about. (AF)

inging Delusions
As thrilling as getting drunk and being in a crowded bar with screaming strangers all waiting for a shiny ball to drop sounds, there has to be another option…and there is. The Mountain Cloud Zen Center is offering an alternative with a more mellowed out way to ring in the new year. Think sitting silently, ringing bells and chanting mantras type of vibe. Rather than a dropping flashing ball, the impressively large Densho bell is wrung 108 times symbolising the ringing out of all our crazy delusions…something we could all use these days. The meditation is followed by a community gathering with food, drinks and a celebration. (AF)
Ringing in the New Year with Mountain Cloud Zen Center: 5:30 pm Tuesday, Dec. 31 Donations welcome. Mountain Cloud Zen Center 7241 Old Santa Fe Trail, (505) 303-0036
Post-Xmas Flamenco
La Emi carries us from Christmas to New Year’s Eve
The presents are unwrapped and the tree has become a rude shade of brown—Christmas is over, and you feel weird as hell now. Not to worry, though, because there’s still plenty to do in Santa Fe before the end of the year, and this is probably super-good news for people who have friends and family in from out of town and no idea what to do with them.
Enter La Emi, Santa Fe’s own flamenco master who, in recent months, moved from her longtime performance space at The Lodge to the Inn & Spa at Loretto over the summer.
“This is a new beginning,” Le Emi told us back when the move went down. “Although the vision was always to do something with my dance company and Vicente Griego, my godfather, with his band Revozo—and we’re finally getting to do it.”
Of course, Le Emi is also known for her dance school and work within schools across the state, but she always makes time for the Santa Fe faithful. Attend knowing you’re seeing someone at the top of their game—someone who loves the art form as much as life itself. In other words, if you like flamenco, you’ll probably love this. (ADV)
