Authorities are reporting that a new fire has started in the Pecos Wilderness (Santa Fe National Forest, Española Ranger District), southeast of Borrego Mesa. See the press release below:

Location: Pecos Wilderness, approximately six miles southeast of Borrego Mesa.

Cause: Lightning
Fuels: Mixed conifer, heavy dead and down fuels

Resources: 4 reppellers, various district resources, 1 hotshot crew, smokejumpers
Today's Weather: Hot, 77-82 degrees, above normal temperatures, isolated dry thunderstorms expected today.
Structures/threats: no structures in Pecos Wilderness.

Road Closures: N/A
Summary: Fire is in the Pecos Wilderness and is very remote, and steep. There is potential for fire to spread quickly because of the amount of downed trees in the "blowdown" area.

Thompson Ridge evacuation update: "The voluntary evacuation order for Thompson Ridge, Rancho de la Cueva, and Elk Valley will be lifted today at 4:00 p.m. Forest Service Road 105 remains closed to all traffic north of Thompson Ridge at the junction with Valles Caldera Road 08."
This morning, experts are reporting that the Thompson Ridge Fire, now 40 percent contained, covers 21,089 acres. The most recent report of the Tres Lagunas Fire states the fire is 60 percent contained and covers 10,040 acres.
HWY 4 is OPEN. With the southeastern fire perimeters being held at nearly a mile from Highway 4, fire officials have reopened NM Highway 4. As a safety reminder, all are advised to take extra caution.
