Kids fishing derby Oct. 12
Get out your rod and reel, kids, Santa Fe's annual fishing derby didn't happen in the summer because of low water supply, but officials have announced they'll put on the event Saturday (Oct. 12) instead.---
Water has been flowing in the Santa Fe River this fall because the city has allowed its upstream reservoirs to empty for repairs. Instead of capturing runoff for the drinking water system, the river is running through the city.
City Councilor Ronald Trujillo says given that scenario, he worked with officials at the state Department of Game and Fish to get the kids event lined up in a hurry. The city has already begun laying strategic sandbags to create pools and the state will stock the waterway with trout later in the week, he tells SFR.
“I remember fishing the Santa Fe River as kid with my grandfather,” the councilor recalls. “Times have changed over the years with the reservoirs and all that, but being able to give these kids in Santa Fe the opportunity to fish their river, that’s good.”
Kids under the age of 12 don't need a state fishing license to participate in the event, he says, they just need to show up in the area between Don Gaspar Avenue and Old Santa Fe trail between 7 a.m. and noon.
