New Mexico health officials today reported 69 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total thus far to 24,535.
Bernalillo County had the most new cases: 14, followed by San Juan County with nine and Doña Ana and Eddy counties, each with seven. Santa Fe County had five new cases today.
Indeed, daily case counts continue to decline in New Mexico, according to the state's most recent modeling of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, growth rates in the public health's Metro region, which includes Bernalillo County, and the Northeast region, which includes Santa Fe County, are increasing.
Additionally, the effective rate of transmission—one of the key indicators the state monitors—has risen to 1.0 statewide, still slightly below the gating criteria goal of 1.05 or less, but higher than earlier in the month when it had dropped to 0.82.
The effective rate of transmission varies by region, with increases again in the Northeast and Metro regions. In the Northeast region, the most recent report shows the effective rate of transmission at 1.3—the highest in the state—the Metro region is at 1.2.
The Northwest, which includes San Juan, McKinley and Cibola counties— also has risen to 1.1. All three are at levels characterized as requiring mitigation. Effective rates of transmission in the Southwest and Southeast have both dropped to 0.6 and 0.9 respectively.
The state also announced three additional deaths today from Doña Ana and Rio Arriba counties; there have now been 750 total fatalities. New Mexico's case fatality rates have had nominal change across regions, but the statewide case fatality rate of 4.2% remains higher than the national rate of 3.1%.
As of today, 64 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
Patients who are 60+ years old continue to make up the largest percentage of hospital admissions each week. The 30-to-44 and 45-to-59-year-old age groups each represented less than 25% of admissions last week. New hospitalizations of Native American patients may be beginning to increase, while admissions of white and Hispanic or Latino patients are declining.
