New Mexico health officials today reported 82 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total thus far to 26,923.
Bernalillo County led with 17 new cases, followed by McKinley County with 12 and Chaves County with nine. Santa Fe County had three new cases. Four more cases were reported among New Mexico Corrections inmates at Lea County Correctional Facility.
New Mexico's statewide effective rate of transmission remains at 0.9—below the targeted rate of 1.05 set as the gating criteria—according to today's weekly modeling report.
The rate of transmission has, however, risen to 1.0 in the northeast region, of which Santa Fe is part, and the southeast. All regions have decreasing case counts relative to the past 14-day period, and the highest percentage of cases have occurred in patients 35-64 years old followed by 18-34 years old in all regions as well.
With the exception of the northwest region where Native Americans have the highest proportion of cases, Hispanics make up the largest proportion of cases. The modeling report also shows that for those cases reporting activities, travel and visits to restaurants and breweries have begun to increase.
The state also announced seven additional deaths today, including the fifth death from Santa Fe County: a man in his 70s who was hospitalized. Taos County also reported its fourth death today, along with fatalities from Bernalillo, McKinley, Luna, Otero and Sandoval counties. There have now been 830 deaths.
As of today, 59 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.* According to the modeling report, the highest percentage of hospitalizations has occurred in patients 35 to 64 years old, followed by 65 years and over across all regions. With the exception of the Northwest region, Hispanics make up the highest percentage of hospitalizations.
The southeast region made up the highest percentage of hospital admissions last week, but the southwest region hospital admissions may be beginning to increase as well.
