New Mexico health officials today reported 827 new COVID-19 cases—a new record high—bringing the statewide total so far to 38,715.
Bernalillo County had 292 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 172. Santa Fe County had the third highest number of new cases statewide and also a record number of new cases: 64.
The Public Education Department reported 21 new cases in public schools in 10 counties: eight students and 13 staff members, including one in Santa Fe County.
The state also announced eight additional deaths, including the 13th from Santa Fe County, as well as deaths from Bernalillo, Chaves, Curry, Doña Ana, Luna and Sandoval counties; there have now been 950 fatalities.
As of today, 202 people are hospitalized with COVID-19—three fewer than yesterday.*
The state environment department issued its second watchlist for New Mexico places of employment that have had two or more rapid responses in the last 14 days. There are currently 65 such businesses, including three in Santa Fe: Whole Foods, Guy's Painting and Paseo del Sol Apartments. Yesterday's list, which had 12 Santa Fe businesses on it, apparently had "data quality" issues, according to a news release. This week, the department will "only include organizations for which NMED conducts the rapid response, which includes grocery stores, restaurants, retail stores, gyms, salons, business offices and others." Other establishments will be included starting next week.
Starting Oct. 23, most establishments with four rapid responses within the prior 14 days will be required to cease operations for two weeks to prevent further spread of COVID-19—these facilities will also be listed online.
A rapid response is initiated when the state learns of a positive COVID-19 case in the workplace. NMED or the state agency initiating the rapid response will offer direction to organizations regarding testing, quarantining and isolating, disinfecting, and COVID-Safe Practices.
