New Mexico health officials today reported 1,759 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 112,950. The health department has designated 40,058 of those cases as recovered.
Bernalillo County led with 601 new cases, followed by San Juan County with 209 and 124 in Santa Fe County.
Today's COVID-19 watchlist from the state environment department lists 129 establishments statewide that have had two or more employees test positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days, including nine in Santa Fe: Cafe Castro; Chick-fil-A; McDonald's on Airport Road; the Netflix production of The Harder They Come; Pepsi Bottling Group; Sam's Club; the Santa Fe Animal Shelter; the Smith's Food & Drug stores on Pacheco; and Santa Fe High School.
The state also announced 34 additional deaths, including two from Santa Fe County: a male in his 80s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions and a male in his 90s who was a resident of the Pacifica Senior Living facility in Santa Fe. There have now been 43 deaths in Santa Fe County so far and 1,823 statewide.
As of today, 917 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.* While the figure is slightly lower than yesterday (when 925 people were hospitalized), health and hospital leaders several times this week warned that New Mexico's facilities and workers are at capacity. Today's New York Times also cited Albuquerque as one of the cities in the US with the most dire shortages of ICU beds. Indeed, yesterday New Mexico Human Services Secretary David Scrase, accompanied by Dr. Michael Richards, vice chancellor for clinical affairs at UNM Health Services and Presbyterian Healthcare Services Medical Director Dr. Denise Gonzales presented information on what it will mean if the state moves toward crisis standards of care, as is expected to happen.
Meanwhile, the state environment department today announced it will begin a COVID-19 wastewater monitoring program at congregate settings such as corrections and Children, Youth and Family Department facilities in the southwest region of New Mexico. That region was chosen due to its high positivity and low testing rates, according to a news release.
In the initial phase of this program, the environment department and contractor ERG will collect samples twice a week from these facilities, which will be analyzed for concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes the COVID-19 illness). “Since the virus is excreted in bodily fluids before an infected person experiences symptoms, this data can be used as an early indicator of spread in the facility and a trigger to initiate testing of individuals at the facility,” the news release states. “Wastewater surveillance also detects when the virus is shed by asymptomatic individuals.”
