New Mexico health officials today reported 893 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 157,974. Of those, the health department has designated 80,580 as recovered.
Bernalillo County had 231 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 105 and Sandoval County with 89. Santa Fe County had 37 new cases today.
The state also announced 30 additional deaths, including a hospitalized man in his 90s from Santa Fe County. There have now been 2,794 fatalities statewide.
As of today, 715 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
The state's Jan. 11 epidemiology report shows an uptick in the effective rate of spread in all regions of the state. Statewide, the health department's gating criteria website lists that rate at 1.15, slightly above the preferred 1.05 or less threshold.
While new daily cases have dipped below 1,000 for two days running, daily cases over a seven-day average remain significantly higher than the 168 criteria at 1,223, and the statewide test positivity rate is at 11.9% versus the desired 5.0%.
County-level daily case and test positivity rates will be updated tomorrow under the state's red-to-green public health framework. That framework places counties with new COVID-19 case incident rates of greater than 8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the most recent two-week period and an average percent of positive COVID-19 test results over the most recent 14-day period greater than 5% into a red and most restrictive category for business capacity and other activities. Currently, all counties are red with the exception of Catron County, which is yellow. Counties that meet one criteria (in the case of Catron County, its last published cases per 100,000 was at 5.7) have more flexibility in the yellow zone. Only counties meeting both criteria can go green and have the fewest restrictions.
