Of the nearly 442,000 vaccines administered so far in New Mexico, Native Americans have had the highest percentage of vaccines for any identified group by ethnicity, according to new data on the health department's vaccine dashboard.
The dashboard states that 22.1% of the state's 145,589 Native Americans have been partially vaccinated and 8.9% have been fully vaccinated.
"It's great to see the state's efforts at equitable distribution paying off," DOH Communications Director Matt Bieber said via email in response to SFR's questions about vaccination rates, "but obviously, there's much more work to be done."
The state's most recent epidemiology report on COVID-19 demographics also shows Native Americans have had the highest case rate for COVID-19 since the pandemic's inception, as well as the highest mortality rate.
The next highest group for having received vaccinations in the state—Asian or Pacific Islanders—have been vaccinated partially or fully at 18.3% and 9.7%, respectively.
For Hispanics or Latinos, the largest population in the state at 780,908, just 12% have been partially vaccinated and only 5.7% fully. Hispanics have had the second highest case rate and mortality rate in the state.
New Mexico's Black population also has had a low percent of vaccinations: just 9% have had one vaccination and 4.5% have had both.
Regarding low vaccination rates for both Hispanics and Blacks, Bieber said: "DOH is concerned about low vaccination rates among any community. In the coming weeks, the Department will be launching a series of additional measures to target vaccine distribution to vulnerable communities across New Mexico."
For whites, the second highest population group at 686,030, 17.1% have been partially vaccinated and 7.8% have had both shots.
According to the dashboard, 36,665 people whose race is unknown have had their first shot and 15,778 have had their second.
SFR has a pending public records request from Jan. 25 that asks the health department to provide a breakdown for people who have been vaccinated through the state's portal by age, geography, gender and underlying condition, if applicable.
