If you've been wondering whether Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has received her COVID-19 vaccine yet, the answer is yes: today.
The governor, 61, is eligible by age following last week's expansion of the state's vaccine plan to include people 60 years and older. In a prepared statement, Lujan Grisham said it had been important to her to "wait until it was my turn in the priority list—just like we have asked so many New Mexicans to wait their turn, and to be patient, to trust the process is moving as quickly as it can, and to keep wearing our masks and physically distancing to protect each other and our families."
According to the health department's vaccine dashboard, 50.1% of New Mexicans aged 60 to 74 have received at least one shot and 27.9% are fully inoculated. People 75 years and older lead in both categories, with 69% with at least one shot and 54.7% with both. In the youngest age group—16 through 59—26.2% have had at least one shot and 15.3% have had both. Current eligibility extends to approximately 1,620,000 out of the 1,680,605 New Mexicans who are over 16 and, therefore, able to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Health Secretary Dr. Tracie C. Collins said during a news conference earlier this week she anticipates the remaining people in Phase 2 will become eligible mid-April.
The state is on track to receive a 20,000 dose increase in next week's allocation for a total of 116,280 doses.
Overall, 40.8% of New Mexicans have had at least one shot; close to 25% have had both. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently ranks New Mexico first in the US for per population doses administered.
The governor also said she doesn't like needles and was nervous: "But it means I get to see my mom sooner. It means I'm doing my part to help end the pandemic. And it means I'm doing my part to help protect New Mexico. So, despite that fear, getting my shot today was an absolute no-brainer."
According to a news release, the governor received the Pfizer vaccine at Desert Sage Academy in Santa Fe.
New Mexico health officials today reported 238 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 190,716. The health department has designated 173,068 of those cases as recovered.
Bernalillo County had 73 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 36 and San Juan County with 22. Santa Fe County had 20 new cases today—twice as many as yesterday. Eleven of Santa Fe County's new cases came from the 87507 ZIP code, which ranked second in the state today for most new cases.
The state also announced seven additional deaths; there have now been 3,923 fatalities.
