A Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy fired at least one shot on Wednesday at a 45-year-old man who was carrying a “fence post” and walking “aggressively toward” the deputy, according to New Mexico State Police, the agency investigating the shooting.
Edward Daniel Santana died outside a residence at #1 Entrada Capulin, reads the State Police news release, issued around 11 am Friday.
Just before the shooting, another deputy fired a Taser at the Santana; State Police did not describe whether that tactic was effective.
The incident marked the fourth cop shooting in Santa Fe County in two weeks’ time and the second by local sheriff’s deputies. State Police is investigating all four, and that agency has not identified the dead person or the deputies who fired in a fatal, late-night encounter on June 23 on Siler Road near Rufina Street—or the deputy who killed Santana this week.
The first of the four shootings came around lunchtime on June 23, when Santa Fe Police Sgt. Bradley Lopez killed Francisco Javier Lino-Gutierrez, 29, during a foot pursuit downtown after Lino-Gutierrez pointed a gun at Lopez, according to State Police.
In the third shooting of the string, a State Police officer wounded 40-year-old Jamie Bravo with at least one shot near Calle Pardo and Chaparral. The agency has not identified the shooting officer in that case.
No officers or deputies were injured in any of the four recent encounters, according to State Police.
Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the residence on Entrada Capulin around 8 am Wednesday to investigate a domestic violence incident, the news release says. They found 67-year-old Delia Cervantes lying on a patio bench outside. A family member told officers and deputies Cervantes had been stabbed.
Deputies carried her to safety before they confronted Santana, according to the release. Paramedics took Cervantes to an area hospital, where she later died.
After the shooting, deputies rendered aid to Santana, but he died at the scene, according to State Police.
