COVID-19 Map
The health department today debuted a stand-alone website for its Trusted Voices campaign, which features a variety of community members—from ministers to nurses to doctors to musicians—sharing their experiences with COVID-19 and endorsements for the COVID-19 vaccine.
“My favorite thing about Trusted Voices is not just the message, but the messengers,” Department of Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins said in a statement. “This project has been a grassroots effort from the start, and continues to grow and evolve to reach every corner of New Mexico. Anyone, from any corner of the state, can share their story in any language.”
One of those voices, Leroy Medina, is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso with a master’s degree in bassoon performance. “You know what really sucks is I can’t use my degree right now,” Medina says in his testimonial. “Sharing that experience of performing and hearing people just be happy to hear music is one of the greatest experiences that we can all share in this world. So join me in getting vaccinated.” All the videos can be viewed on YouTube.
The new microsite also encourages more people to become involved in the campaign, by either scheduling time to record a video or radio message, or simply recording a message (vertical and no longer than 60 seconds) on one’s phone and uploading it to the site for review. DOH also is offering to work directly with anyone who wants to write an Op-Ed for consideration in local media outlets.
New Mexico health officials today reported 186 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 202,405. The health department has designated 188,174 of those cases as recovered.
Seventy-eight cases among people held by federal agencies at the Torrance County Detention Facility led today’s case count, followed by Bernalillo County with 31; San Juan County with 16; and Sandoval County with 10. Santa Fe County had six cases today.
The state also announced six additional deaths, including one in Santa Fe County: A woman in her 50s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions. Based on yesterday’s audited number of fatalities, today’s death should be Santa Fe County’s 147th, although the health department’s data dashboard does not reflect that addition. SFR has an outstanding question to DOH to clarify.
Two of today’s reported deaths occurred more than 30 days ago. According to a health department news release, COVID-related deaths are reported when a death certificate has been issued and some death certificates are delayed due to insufficient information. There have now been 4,251 total fatalities.
As of today, 133 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
Currently, 64.4% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 54.2% are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, 73.5% have had at least one dose and 62.5% are fully inoculated.
Earlier today, Moderna announced it will be applying for approval in early June to federal regulators for its vaccine to be authorized for adolescents, following a successful clinical trial, “TeenCOVE,” of more than 3,700 participants ages 12 to less than 18 years in the US. According to a news release, no cases of COVID-19 were observed in participants who received two doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and it had an efficacy of 93% 14 days after the first dose.
Currently, Pfizer is the only vaccine approved for people under the age of 18. Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s authorization for adolescents 12 to 15-years-old on May 12, 15.4% have had at least one dose in New Mexico (none are fully vaccinated yet). In the 16-17-year-old age group, 36.1% have had at least one dose and 25.9% are fully vaccinated. Those statistics only cover state data, as federal vaccine data for people ages 12 to 15 are not yet available, according to the health department.
