New Mexico health officials today reported 341 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily number recorded by the health department since the start of the pandemic in March. During July's peak, daily case numbers hit 324 on July 21.
Today's new cases bring the statewide total number of cases to 30,000, and follow yesterday's warnings by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and other officials about rising cases across the state. They also come as local officials react to today's news that President Donald Trump has tested positive for COVID-19. Trump reportedly is leaving today to spend a few days at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Bernalillo County led with the most new cases today in New Mexico: 99 of them, followed by Doña Ana County with 45 and Chaves County with 32. Santa Fe County had 17 new cases today.
The Public Education Department reported five new cases in the last 24 hours at schools in Chaves, Doña Ana, Lea, Sandoval and Valencia counties.
The state also announced five additional deaths from Bernalillo, Doña Ana, Eddy and Lea counties; there have now been 887 fatalities.
As of today, 89 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
According to the environment department, Santa Fe County has had close to two dozen rapid responses for COVID-19 cases to businesses and other institutions since Monday, including ones to Target, Del Charro, La Fonda and Santa Fe Indian School.
