Morning Word
We are heading into the slow news time of the year, at least when it comes to politics.
OK, and a lot of other things as well.
---
The primary elections are over and the summer stories will turn from politics towards which portions of New Mexico are on fire. And it seems like it is a very large portion of the state that is on fire -- and it will only get worse as the summer goes on.
One more thing. I'll ask you to
and
. And for that matter,
and
.
On to the Word:
- Speaking of fires, the
- Little Bear fire near Ruidoso is over 26,000 acres now
- .
- And U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce
- says it is the fault of the U.S. Forest Service
- for the large fires. Pearce has had frequent clashes with the Forest Service.
- The National Guard is
- going to help out in the Little Bear fire
- .
- The massive Whitewater-Baldy fire is
- 32 percent contained
- . It currently sits at 270,000 acres -- which is more than 400 square miles. A massive fire in the Gila.
- Repeat drunken drivers
- are "responsible for a growing share of traffic deaths in New Mexico." I wonder if there are more drunk drivers being caught that contributes to this or not. Either way, getting drunk drivers off the street needs to continue to be a priority in New Mexico.
- Is Clemente Sanchez
- the most hard-luck candidate in all of politics
- ?
- Four years ago, Clemente Sanchez of Grants lost a state Senate race by five votes. Sanchez ran again last week in the Democratic primary for the same seat. Election Night ended with him three votes behind the leader, his niece.
- Oof.
- An Eastern New Mexico paper warns Gov. Susana Martinez that they
- will forgive but they won't forget
- her involvement in a Republican Senate primary there, where her favorite candidate lost. The editorial was... interesting:
- The Martinez-Spears campaign featured facts twisted into political half-truths about Woods’ character. The governor and her hired gun, political lipster Jay McCleskey of Albuquerque, didn’t like that Woods dared to give some friends who were Democrats small campaign contributions. All the while the governor’s group conveniently never mentioned she blessed some Democrats she liked with a little cash.
Did we mention east-siders bristle when they smell hypocrisy? - Though Martinez is from Las Cruces, it appears that many already view her as part of Santa Fe.
- Steve Terrell says the
- early ads have disappointed if you're looking for all-out attacks
- .
- "Now, it's coming," I chuckled cynically. But again, here's smiling Heather with Old Glory waving in the blue sky behind her. Nothing bad about Heinrich, just a friendly female voice praising Wilson as an "independent record of standing up to her own party."
Wait, a minute ... since when did Karl Rove like Republicans bucking the party line? - One of the better reads from the always-excellent Terrell.
- Speaking of Terrell, he
- writes about the groups supporting U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich and former U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson
- , the candidates who face off in the U.S. Senate general election.
- Now that they have won their partisan primaries, both candidates will be trying to appeal to moderate voters, who tend to decide elections. Both Heinrich and Wilson can honestly say that they are not on either extreme, according to rankings by The National Journal, a Washington, D.C.-based weekly publication focused on politics and government.
- The Albuquerque Journal
- looks at Sunland Park
- . I can't excerpt a good part of it -- but read it. Sunland Park is a mess and no one knows if or when they will have a new mayor.
- This is
- what people hate about Washington D.C. reporting
- .
- Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was hanging out in Georgetown on Thursday having lunch at Clyde's. A Yeas & Nays spy said that Richardson was dining with another older gentleman in the atrium and sported a blue button up shirt, what appeared to be a green and blue Hermes tie, and a Navy blue blazer. "Richardson is laughing and seems to be enjoying himself," the source reported.
- What possible value is there in writing about seeing a politician at a restaurant or coffee shop? Very annoying.
- Are bear hunts working
- ?
- I'm a huge Dodgers fan. Former Dodger, and current Albuquerque Isotope, Aaron Miles
- has an insane story
- .
- “I just got back from having dinner with my uncle, and I was alone in the room at about 9:30 or 10 at night,” says Miles. “Two guys robbed a bunch of the guys in the hotel room next to me. I had my door slightly opened, and they came into my room.
I was a hostage a good 45 minutes. “One of (the robbers) jumped out of the second story window when the cops pulled up, and the other guy put a gun to my head for a good 45 minutes.” - The Isotopes are the AAA affiliate for the Dodgers.
- Speaking of Pearce... Milan Simonich looks at
- the listing of the dunes sandbush lizard
- , a decision in which will be coming soon.
