Gimme shelter
As it so happens, you have no more right to rent out your backyard shed than you do to rent out your water heater closet. After SFR posted a picture of a Craigslist ad offering rental of a shed for $575 a month—provided prospective tenants met a long list of criteria—the city called owner Doug Conwell to schedule an inspection. State law requires things like, you know, a kitchen and bathroom and such, and the city wanted to see if Conwell's shed had them. He called back to say he'd pulled the ad.
Colorado State pulls Native prospective students off tour
In today's edition of stories that will make your heart hurt and your blood boil, a nervous mother called campus police ($) at Colorado State University because she apparently found the presence of a pair of Native American brothers unsettling. They were supposed to be there. Thomas Kanewakeron Gray was a prospective student, visiting with his brother. They'd reserved spots on the tour. By the time police figured out what a crock the call was, the tour had moved on. The school says it's embarrassed. The boys' mother is heartbroken.
Carl vs. the establishment
State Rep. Carl Trujillo says accusations against him of sexual misconduct aren't true and are evidence that his primary opponent and establishment powers are plotting against him. His campaign finance records suggest otherwise. New Mexico in Depth dug into them and they show Trujillo has raised money from utilities and oil companies and other politicians.
Bicyclist shot in Cruces
Former Santa Fe Police Chief Patrick Gallagher is back in the news, as an officer from his new department in Las Cruces shot a bicyclist ($) three or four times after attempting to pull the man over for an unspecified violation. The man is in critical condition.
Can't McHardly wait
SFR's cover story this week looks at what's happened in the seven months since the city of Santa Fe released the McHard report. The fraud assessment showed the city's policies and practices were dangerously exposed to malfeasance. But other than saying a new software system will address many of the concerns, the city has said little about what it's doing or done to put other problems behind it.
Real ID, real lawsuit
A group is suing the state on behalf of immigrants and the homeless. It says the state is asking them for some sort of federal identification number when they apply for a driver authorization card. That's the lower-security version of the Real ID license that lets people drive but not get on a plane ($) or access federal facilities. The group says asking for a federal ID number violates state law.
(No) fire on the mountains
The Santa Fe National Forest has upped its fire restrictions, moving to its second stage of preventive measures. The new rules say no campfires, no charcoal stoves, no chainsaws, no off-road vehicles … you get the idea. It wasn't until June last year that the forest implemented its first set of restrictions. Those were lifted in July.
What say you, Mother Nature?
It’s gonna be warm and dry. There’s a chance of some showers over the mountains tonight , which would be great, but otherwise it’s going to be sunny and warm tomorrow with even higher temperatures expected Sunday.
