New Mexico may not be back in the green zone yet but, as of today, we're out of the red one for now, despite a bump in new cases today.
That's according to the national COVID Exit Strategy website, which state officials have kept an eye on throughout the pandemic, and which has been evaluating each state's progress in key gating criteria measures. New Mexico—which had been one of the few states holding a "green" or "trending better" status earlier in the pandemic—has been stuck in the "red" or "trending poorly" zone since cases began rising.
Now, as they are dropping, the state has been upgraded to "yellow," or "caution warranted," which—despite the phrasing—is an improvement.
Moreover, as of today, New Mexico is meeting all eight of its gating criteria. The most recent effective rate of transmission is 0.70 on a 10-day rolling average; the state is still performing above its goal of 5,000 tests per day; and contact tracing of both people who have tested positive and those with whom they have had proximity are well within the parameters. Significantly, the state's daily case number over a seven-day rolling average—the one criteria that had remained elusive until now—has dropped to 137, which is below the target of 168 set by the Medical Advisory Team.
Today, however, the state reported 174 additional COVID-19 cases, a notable jump over the last few days when new case counts were fewer than 100. The new cases bring the statewide total thus far to 23,749.
Bernalillo County continues in the lead with new cases: 33 of them today, followed by Lea County with 25 and Chaves County with 19. Santa Fe County had 12 new cases reported today.
The state also announced six new deaths in Bernalillo, McKinley, San Juan and Taos counties. There have been 729 fatalities.
As of today, 94 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
