New Mexico health officials today reported 143 additional positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the statewide total of cases so far to 5,503.
McKinley County continues to have the most new cases: 52, as of today, followed by San Juan County with 34 and Bernalillo County with 25.
The state also announced 11 additional deaths, including the third for Santa Fe County: a male in his 80s who was hospitalized, had underlying medical conditions and was a patient at the Uptown Genesis facility in Albuquerque. Six of the other fatalities came from McKinley County across a spectrum of ages: a woman in her 20s died, as did a woman in her 100s. Bernalillo, Otero, San Juan, and Socorro counties each had one death as well.
As of today, 209 people are hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.* The health department has designated 1,576 COVID-19 cases as recovered.
The new cases and fatalities follow yesterday's announcement by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham that Phase 1 of an economic recovery plan will begin on Saturday, May 16, when some retailers will be allowed to open at 25% capacity, along with offices. Each stage of economic recovery, state officials say, will depend on the ability for New Mexico to meet certain "gating" criteria, including increased testing and contact tracing capacity.
To that end, New Mexico's federal congressional delegation today announced the state will be receiving more than $77 million for COVID-19 testing and contact tracing from the US Department of Health and Human Services, according to a news release from US Sen. Tom Udall's office. The funds come from a relief package passed by Congress last month that includes $25 billion for national testing and contact tracing.

- A female in her 100s from McKinley County. The individual had underlying medical conditions and was a resident of the Little Sisters of the Poor facility in Gallup.
- A female in her 50s from Otero County. The individual was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.
- A male in his 90s from San Juan County. The individual had underlying medical conditions and was a resident of Life Care Center in Farmington.
- A male in his 80s from Santa Fe County. The individual was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. The individual was a patient at the Uptown Genesis facility in Albuquerque.
- A female in her 60s from Socorro County. The individual was hospitalized.
