As New Mexico heads into what officials hope will be a socially distant Thanksgiving holiday, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a $330 million COVID-19 relief package.
The legislation—passed yesterday—includes $100 million in grants for small businesses in New Mexico; one-time $1,200 supplemental payment for the 100,000 New Mexicans on unemployment; $15 million for emergency housing; $5 million for emergency food bank services; and $5 million direct assistance to low-income residents who did not receive an "economic impact payment" from the federal government.
The bill also allocates $10 million to the health department for COVID-19 testing, contact tracing and vaccine distribution.
New Mexico health officials today reported 1,873 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 88,102. Of those, the health department has designated 30,170 as recovered.
Bernalillo County led with 576 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 223 and Sandoval County with 130. Santa Fe County had 114 new cases and the 87507 ZIP code returned to the top 10 jurisdictions with the most new cases, coming in sixth with 50 new cases.
The state also announced 23 additional deaths; there have now been 1,451 fatalities.
As of today, 897 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, an increase of approximately 15.6% from one week ago.*
The environment department's watchlist for establishments that have reported two or more COVID-19 cases among employees today includes 299 places, 25 in Santa Fe County. Albertsons on Zafarano, Smith's on Cerrillos Road, Sprouts on Paseo de Peralta and Whole Foods all appear on the list, the latter with four rapid responses, which can trigger a closure. Yesterday, the environment and health departments announced a new voluntary agreement for essential businesses such as grocery stores, which allows them to undertake testing themselves and assist with contact tracing to avoid closures. Today, the environment department announced Albertsons has signed that agreement. Currently, four Albertsons in Carlsbad, Hobbs, Las Cruces and Roswell have been closed.
"We are pleased to reach this agreement with the state that allows us to welcome customers and associates back to our stores just in time for Thanksgiving," Jerry Noland, Albertsons' Group vice president of food safety, quality assurance and occupational safety said in a statement.
