COVID-19 Map
The health department today announced the US Food and Drug Administration has modified the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Emergency Use Authorization, allowing for thawed and undiluted vials of Pfizer vaccine to be stored for up to one month in refrigerators. Previously, storage was limited to a maximum of five days.
“This change should make this vaccine more widely available to the American public by facilitating the ability of vaccine providers, such as community doctors’ offices, to receive, store and administer the vaccine,” FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Dr. Peter Marks said in a statement.
New Mexico Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins said in a statement the shift “will mean more flexible storage for health care providers—making it even easier for New Mexicans to access COVID-19 vaccine.” A health department news release also says smaller packages of the Pfizer vaccine will soon be available, providing more distribution options for smaller COVID-19 vaccine providers.
New Mexico health officials today reported 366 new COVID-19 cases for the three-day period of May 22 through May 24, bringing the statewide total so far to 202,221. The health department has designated 187,937 of those cases as recovered.
Bernalillo County had 91 new cases, followed by San Juan County with 61 and Doña Ana County with 41. Santa Fe County had 32 new cases. Santa Fe County’s Southside 87507 ZIP code had the second highest number of new cases in the state today: 17.
The state also announced one additional death: A man in his 60s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions. There have now been 4,245 total fatalities.
According to a health department news release, the New Mexico Department of Health Epidemiology Division has conducted an audit of the reported cases and deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic and reconciled county-level figures based on the audit. “Delays in processing death records were caused by a variety of reasons and these changes reflect the reconciliation of public health information,” DOH says. Santa Fe County has had a total of 146 deaths based on the audit. The full audit table can be viewed here.
As of today, 120 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
Currently, 64.4% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 54.2% are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, 73.5% have had at least one dose and 62.5% are fully inoculated.

County totals are subject to change upon further investigation and determination of residency of individuals positive for COVID-19.
