New Mexico health officials today reported 119 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 27,041.
Lea County led with 16 new cases, followed by Roosevelt County with 15 and Bernalillo and Eddy counties, each with 14. Santa Fe County had 10 new cases.
The state also announced two additional deaths from Doña Ana and Lea counties; there have now been 832 fatalities.
As of today, 59 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
The Public Education Department today also announced three new positive cases of COVID-19 in the last 24-hours. According to a news release, these cases are being reported after rapid responses and verification with the schools and school districts. Following reported cases, affected classrooms and school facilities are required to be thoroughly disinfected, and any staff or students who came into close contact—within 6 feet for three minutes or more—with a newly diagnosed individual must quarantine for 14 days.
Staff who were close contacts must get tested for COVID-19 and provide the school with test results prior to returning to in-person duties. In each case, all staff, parents, guardians and students in impacted schools have been notified. Those cases are:
• One teacher at a public school in Bernalillo County who was last in the school building on Aug. 25.
• One student at a public school in McKinley County who was last in the school building on Sept. 9.
• One staff secretary at a public school district office in Roosevelt County who was last in the office building on Sept. 9.
