One person is dead following a shooting incident with local police on Sunday, but details remain scarce.
Santa Fe Police Department officers involved in the incident were “uninjured,” according to a social media post from the New Mexico State Police, who investigated the incident that occurred around 6:30 a.m. on the 100 block of La Placita Circle.
On Monday, state police released more details about the shooting on its Facebook page. According to the post, SFPD officers were dispatched to the area for a disturbance at approximately 6 a.m. On arrival, they encountered 33-year-old Stephanie Grace Coon of Santa Fe, who identifies as Gracen.
Coon wielded a box cutter and was making threats to kill someone in the residence, according to the release. Coon then approached officers, who gave “multiple commands” to drop the weapon. That’s when one officer fired and struck the suspect. Officers rendered medical aid until an ambulance arrived and transported Coon to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
SFPD Deputy Chief Ben Valdez tells SFR officials will release the names of the officers that were on the scene soon.
Police gunfire has rang through city streets three times in recent weeks. Fiesta de Santa Fé celebrations came to an early end when officers shot at a suspected car thief who was driving recklessly near the Santa Fe Plaza Sept. 8. In September, Santa Fe police shot and wounded a man in the parking lot of the Denny’s restaurant on Cerrillos Road.
