A minor was transferred to a local hospital with injuries following a DWI incident at the Walmart Supercenter off Herrera Drive shortly before the store closed on Thursday.
At 10:07 pm, police say dispatch received information that an intoxicated driver had crashed into a vehicle and subsequently hit an occupant of the offending vehicle who had exited it after the initial crash. A bystander held down the suspect while multiple witnesses awaited law enforcement’s arrival, according to witness reports.
The Santa Fe Police Department arrived at the Walmart at 10:21 pm, according to records. The victim sustained “minor to serious injuries that were non-life threatening” and was preparing for release from the hospital this morning, Santa Fe Police Department Captain Lawrence Barnett tells SFR.
However, Barnett declined to reveal information about the suspect or the passenger who was struck because they are under the age of 18. The relationship between the two “hasn’t been confirmed,” he says.
“We don’t release juvenile names until it goes through the court process, and we generally do not release the names of the victims in incidents like these,” Barnett says.
The unidentified suspect was taken into custody and charged with aggravated driving while under the influence, possession of an alcoholic beverage by a minor, presence of an open container in a vehicle and possession of cannabis products by a minor.
Barnett says SFPD contacted the juvenile probation office last night, which approved incarceration for the individual pending a hearing.
